The Maitũ Hope Initiative Seedling Nursery is a living demonstration of how agriculture heals, nourishes, and empowers communities. We propagate a wide variety of crops, including African leafy vegetables, capsicums, three varieties of sweet potatoes, yacon, beetroots, pumpkins, passion fruits, and flowers. These crops are selected for both their market value and their ability to improve diets, restore soil health, and respond to the rising challenge of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension that are affecting many families in Central Kenya.
The nursery is also a space for training women and young people in practical propagation skills, business ideation, and sustainable farming. In a region where unemployment and alcoholism affect many youth, the nursery provides an alternative pathway to dignified livelihoods.
We use goat manure from our Dairy Goat Project to enrich the seedbeds, reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers and creating a regenerative cycle for productive and environmentally sustainable agriculture.
